Itinerary

Option 1: Drive/Fly Itinerary:
Day 1: Darwin to Bamurru Plains
Meet your private guide in Darwin for a scenic transfer to Bamurru Plains, a secluded wilderness safari lodge on the edge of Kakadu. Unwind in your elegant safari bungalow, then enjoy sunset canapés while the floodplains glow gold and crimson.
Day 2: Bamurru Floodplains
Awaken to magpie geese and the rumble of buffalo. Explore the floodplains on private airboat safaris and guided walks through paperbark forests, spotting wallabies and rare birdlife. Nights bring chef-crafted seasonal meals served beneath a canopy of stars.
Day 3: Kakadu National Park

Start the day departing Bamurru Plains by 4WD, travelling across the Top End’s floodplains before entering the World Heritage–listed Kakadu National Park.

Fly by private charter over Kakadu’s vast escarpments, then take a Yellow Water cruise through ancient wetlands where crocodiles and abundant birdlife thrive. Relax in premium rooms at Cooinda Lodge Kakadu, set within the park’s dramatic landscape.

Day 4: Into Arnhem Land

What weather can I expect?
The Top End of Australia has a tropical climate dominated by two main seasons — the wet and the dry. The wet season (November to April) brings hot, humid days, dramatic thunderstorms, and lush green landscapes as rivers and waterfalls flow at their fullest. The dry season (May to October), when our Top End Signature 6 Day Journey operates, delivers warm, sunny days and cool nights. The low humidity is perfect for exploring national parks, wildlife watching, and outdoor adventures. First Nations people read seasons by ecological cues, flowering plants, bird movements, wind shifts and changing water levels rather than by fixed calendar months.
  • Yekke – Cooler Season (May to Mid-June, 21°C–33°C) Humidity drops and mornings are misty. Water lilies cover the billabongs; days are sunny and warm.
  • Wurrkeng – Cold Weather (Mid-June to Mid-August, 17°C–32°C) The coolest, driest season. Clear days and comfortable low humidity make it ideal for exploring. Wetlands fill with birdlife, especially Magpie Geese gathering in large flocks.
  • Kurrung – Hot, Dry Season (Mid-August to Mid-October, 23°C–37°C) Days grow hotter and vegetation starts to bloom. Floodwaters retreat, attracting huge flocks of birds making this prime time for 4WD adventures and croc-spotting cruises.
We do not operate during the following seasons. For your reference:
  • Kunumeleng – Pre-Monsoon (Late October to Late December, 24°C–37°C) Hot, humid days with afternoon storms building. The landscape greens, fish move to breeding grounds, and birdlife disperses across the wetlands.
  • Kudjewk – Monsoon (December to February, 24°C–34°C) Heavy rains and thunderstorms transform the landscape. Lush growth returns, floodwater rises, and wildlife thrives.
  • Bangkerreng – Storm Season (Mid-March to April, 23°C–34°C) Short, ferocious storms level the grass and light up the skies. The landscape becomes vividly green, with rains easing and skies clearing by April.
It’s wise to prepare for a wider range of conditions than the average temperatures suggest
What kind of vehicle will I be travelling in?
You will travel in a comfortable, air-conditioned 4WD touring vehicle designed for the rugged conditions of the Top End and Arnhem Land. Vehicles are equipped for remote travel, offer excellent visibility, and allow access to areas not reachable by standard transport. Your guide will drive at a relaxed pace to maximise comfort and sightseeing opportunities.
Can the tour become exclusive for just two people?
Yes, we can make that happen. Our Signature Journeys tours are designed to travel with a minimum of two people and a maximum of six people. We’ve based the ‘from price’ on four people travelling on the tour, so if you’re happy for others to join your tour we will commit to the price listed. However if you’d like to travel exclusively in a group of two, there will be an increase, so please let us know.
Can you provide single supplement with the accommodation?
Yes, we certainly can but there will be a reduction in the number of people that can attend the tour, and an increase in the price per person rate. Contact our team and we’ll provide you with an updated price.
Can I change the length of time or the itinerary to suit me?
Yes, that’s possible. However, please note many of our partners have exclusive accommodation in remote locations, and with limited availability.
Will I have phone reception while on tour?
Reception is available near major service centres in the region, but coverage in remote areas is limited. All touring vehicles carry a satellite phone for emergencies. This journey is a great opportunity to disconnect and enjoy the desert environment.
Can I smoke or drink in the vehicle?
Smoking and alcohol are not permitted inside the vehicle under Australian Government regulations. Alcohol is allowed at campsites and lodges, but guides may limit consumption for safety. Illegal drugs are strictly prohibited, and passengers carrying them or behaving unsafely may be removed from the tour without refund.
