THE JOURNEY, IS JUST AS IMPORTANT AS THE DESTINATION

When you choose one of our Cairns 4WD tours, you can be assured the journey is just as important as the destination. We’ll collect you from your accommodation, driving you up the scenic Kuranda Range Road to the Village in the Rainforest, before making our way to one of the most notable waterfalls in the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area, Barron Falls. To view the falls, you’ll wander on elevated boardwalks through the rainforest, crossing over streams and enjoying the flora and fauna around you. There’s also paved areas and stairs, crossing over the Kuranda Scenic Railway tracks to the Barron Falls lookout. The 1.2km return walk is not difficult and is largely shaded, with interpretive signage and some metal art installations, of local rainforest insects and reptiles. Once we’ve ticked the Barron Falls off the list, our Cairns 4WD tours continue, heading to another rainforest destination.

GET OFFROAD, 4WD TO THE CLOHESY RIVER FIG TREE

Time to engage the 4WD, as we turn off the highway and take the Clohesy River Road to the Clohesy River Fig Tree. During this drive on our Cairns 4WD tours, we go from bitumen to dirt and cross over rainforest rivers and some of the mountains which form part of the Great Dividing Range. Please note sometimes during summer, these rivers may flood and become unpassable, in which case we will substitute this section of our Cairns 4WD tour with another accessible offroad destination. The Clohesy River Fig Tree is a beautiful example of its kind, and is considered the most magnificent in the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area. Explore the tree and surrounding rainforest on elevated boardwalks, and keep your eyes peeled for local wildlife – sometimes we’re lucky enough to glimpse a Southern Cassowary.

EXPLORE DAVIES CREEK NATIONAL PARK

Our Cairns 4WD tours continue onwards to Davies Creek National Park, where the weather, landscape and vegetation are remarkably different, to the two previous rainforest locations. Davies Creek National Park is noticeably drier – the landscape is more open, characterised by eucalypts forests, acacia woodlands and melaleucas, as well as grass trees and termite mounds. It’s just as beautiful as the rainforest, but more rugged, with granite boulders and rocky outcrops. A main feature here is the Davies Creek and Davies Falls, and you get to see both on our Cairns 4WD tours. Your guide will walk with you to the lookout over the falls, providing interpretive commentary along the way, and there’s time for you to refresh and cool down with a swim, should you choose to do so.

TROPICAL FRUIT TASTING & RETURN TO CAIRNS

As our half-day Cairns 4WD tours itinerary draws to an end.  Due to the variances in weather and landscape, farmers located across the Tablelands are able to grow and harvest a diverse array of local and introduced fruit and vgetables, with production occurring throughout the year and seasons. Crops from the local area surrounding Davis Creek National Park include, but are not limited to, mangoes, pineapples, avocadoes, bananas, paw paw, lychee, rambutans, dragonfruit and so much more. What is available to taste varies according to the season and time you visit, but there’s always some fresh bounty, as well as the opportunity to purchase local honey and nuts. Please note the exact timing, sequence of events and destinations on our Cairns 4WD tours can vary, pending road accessibility and weather, but what you can be assured of, is a memorable half day spent discovering some our favourite spots across the region. We look forward to sharing them with you, on our Cairns 4WD tours.
